Updated: May 18, 2023

Customer needs change rapidly through trends which means every business needs to adapt themselves according to their clients. The first step to achieving efficiency, productivity, and profitability in your processes is identifying what is slowing them down and improving on those points. This practice of adapting to changes in order to streamline operational processes is called the process improvement methodology used by many businesses. However, how do you determine which process improvement methodology is the right one for you?

Let us discuss the various process improvement methodology and which one you should use!

Types of Process Improvement Methodology-

The process improvement methodology for your business will depend on why you want to improve your processes and what you want to improve. Here are the seven process improvement methodology-

#1- Six sigma methodology: Six sigma is generally used in manufacturing to reduce defects and inconsistencies by minimizing the variations in the end product. It uses statistical data as benchmarks to compare the working of your processes. A process is considered optimized if it produces less than 3.4 defects per one million cycles. Six sigma uses two main techniques; DMAIC for existing, and DMADV for new processes.

#2- Total quality management (TQM): This process improvement methodology is widely used in supply chain management and customer satisfaction projects. It is a customer-focused method involving continuous improvement over time. TQM uses data-driven decisions and performance metrics to improve efficiency.

#3- Lean manufacturing: Just-in-time production, lean production, or lean manufacturing, uses five primary principles to achieve productivity. These five principles are —- identify value, value stream mapping, create flow, establish pull, and continuous improvement.

#4- Continuous improvement (Kaizen): The continuous improvement methodology is guided by the Japanese Kaizen philosophy. In the business world, your success probability will enhance if you continuously improve your processes to generate value and eliminate waste. Kaizen removes three kinds of waste-

  • Muda: Wastefulness from practices that don’t add value.

  • Mura: Unevenness due to overproduction.

  • Muri: Overburden or strain on resources.

#5- Plan, Do, Check, Act (PDCA): PDCA cycle is an interactive problem-solving method that uses scientific methods for process improvement and quality control. It involves four steps —- Plan, Do, Check, and Act.

#6- 5 Whys analysis: It is a process-improvement method to identify the root cause of a problem. It asks similar questions five times to figure out the issue with the procedure, except for human error.

#7- Business process management (BPM): Your processes may not upscale with the growth of the business. BPM aims at identifying bottlenecks, automating manual tasks, and finding process-improving strategies. The five steps of BPM are analyze, model, implement, monitor, and optimize.
